Shopify Lets Browser-Based AI Agents Complete Checkout on Merchant Sites

Shopify has opened its checkout to AI agents that work inside a shopper's web browser. These agents can now finish a purchase, not just find products and fill a cart.

The company announced the update on Monday, September 28. It is rolling out to all eligible Shopify merchants.

Some large retailers are taking the opposite approach. Amazon has blocked Meta's Muse AI agent from its retail site, according to Bloomberg. Adidas also appears to be blocking AI agents from making purchases for users.

How Shopify's Checkout Update Works

Shopify already supported WebMCP on its storefronts and carts. This let browser-based agents search a merchant's inventory, find products, and add items to a cart.

The new update extends WebMCP support to checkout, including Shop Pay. Agents can now read the checkout screen, make changes, and submit the order once the buyer gives approval.

Shopify said agents can do this without taking screenshots or scraping web pages. Instead, they use tools built for machines rather than pages designed for people.

The update adds three tools. They are called get_checkout, update_checkout, and complete_checkout.

The first lets an agent inspect a checkout. The second lets it change details such as the customer's address or delivery option. The third places the order after the buyer authorizes it.

Shopify's AI Agent Partnerships and Protocols

Shopify also offers a hosted Model Context Protocol server. That system lets AI agents work with Shopify from server to server.

WebMCP is a proposed standard. It is built for agents that run inside the buyer's own browser.

Both systems rely on Shopify's Universal Commerce Protocol. It gives agents a shared way to search for and discover products, build carts, and check out.

Gil Greenberg, a staff product manager who works on agentic commerce at Shopify, shared the news in a post on X. He urged developers to use the new tools when their agents run in a buyer's browser.

"If your agent is operating in the buyer's browser, use WebMCP tools provided on storefront and checkout to efficiently complete order placement, instead of navigating HTML built for humans," Greenberg wrote.

He said the tools offer structured and efficient APIs. According to Greenberg, they are designed to ensure accurate commerce facts, required disclosures, and handoff requirements.

Several top AI agents already work directly with Shopify. Meta's Muse has a partnership with the company for agentic commerce.

AI agent Instinct is the newest partner. Its partnership with Shopify was announced on Monday, the same day as the checkout update.
