OpenAI has launched a set of new ChatGPT features that look a lot like an office software suite. The move puts the AI company in closer competition with Microsoft.
The features were announced on Tuesday at OpenAI's DevDay developer conference in San Francisco. They are designed for office workers.
Microsoft has been a close partner of OpenAI from the start. But OpenAI is now going after workplace software, which is a core part of Microsoft's business.
At the same time, Microsoft is trying to become more like OpenAI. Salesforce is doing the same.
Over the past year, both companies have released many AI products. The software industry is working to keep up with the changing landscape.
Space Brings Shared Work Into ChatGPT
The main launch is a feature called Space. It is a shared workspace inside ChatGPT where co-workers can work together on a range of tasks.
Inside Space, users can collaborate with the chatbot and with their own Dots. Dots are OpenAI's newly launched AI agent personas that can carry out tasks on a user's behalf.
"Your pages and files all live together in Space, like they would in a drive," said CEO Sam Altman during Tuesday's presentation. "But spaces feel alive."
Space works much like a shared drive, with pages and files stored in one place. The difference is that pages can act on instructions.
Altman said users can give a page specific instructions. For example, a page could be told to check a team channel and update itself with what it finds.
Pages and Slides Target Word and PowerPoint
OpenAI also launched Pages, a word processor that works alongside Space. The company calls it "a new type of document, built for human and agent collaboration."
Pages appears to be OpenAI's answer to Google Docs and Microsoft Word. OpenAI says users can "write, research, generate charts, create images, or visualize information" in it.
The company also announced collaborative slides, which compete with Microsoft PowerPoint. Users can create these slides simply by talking about them within ChatGPT.
Once the slides are made, multiple workers and agents can work on them together. They will be able to leave comments and make edits.
Slides is not available yet. An OpenAI representative said the feature will roll out to users in the coming weeks.
