Elon Musk has warned that more than 200 specialist AI cloud companies could fail or merge as lenders become more careful about who they fund.
Musk shared the warning on X on Sunday. He said lenders have largely stopped financing companies that do not have strong revenue outside of AI data centers.
“That means the 200+ neoclouds are going to see guppy-level death and consolidation. Some will make it through, but not many,” Musk wrote.
A neocloud is a cloud company that rents out computing power for AI. These firms usually run data centers filled with powerful graphics processing units, or GPUs.
Musk said SpaceX was able to secure $40 billion in debt financing for GPUs. He linked this to the company’s investment-grade status and its revenue from Starlink satellite internet and its rocket business.
Gartner Predicts Most Neoclouds Will Not Stay Independent
Musk’s comments follow an October forecast from research firm Gartner. The firm said more than 80% of neocloud providers will stop operating independently by 2030.
Gartner said AI providers are expected to spend nearly $1 trillion on infrastructure in 2026. It expects another $6 trillion in spending between 2027 and 2030.
However, the firm said there is not enough revenue to deliver profitable returns on all of that investment.
Gartner said the pressure could be strongest for neoclouds. These companies must earn enough from AI computing services to keep their operations running.
Larger cloud companies have more varied revenue streams. Gartner said these could support their AI spending for years.
The firm also forecasts that spending on AI-optimized infrastructure-as-a-service will grow from $66 billion in 2027 to $174 billion in 2030. Even so, it said most providers may struggle to earn back their investment before the current generation of AI chips is replaced.
The warnings could also matter for Bitcoin miners that have moved into AI infrastructure. Several mining companies have shifted part of their business toward renting out computing power.
IREN has expanded into AI cloud services and rents computing power to customers. Core Scientific provides data center hosting for neocloud customers, including CoreWeave.
SpaceX Reports Sharp Jump in AI Revenue
Musk’s remarks came days after SpaceX released its latest quarterly results. The company said its “Super Intelligence” business brought in $7.6 billion in third-quarter revenue.
That figure was up 830% from a year earlier. It made up more than half of SpaceX’s total quarterly sales of $14.6 billion.
SpaceX said the growth came from new cloud services agreements, its acquisition of Cursor and wider adoption of its Grok AI model.
