Japan Gives 180,000 Government Workers Access to New AI Agent

Japan’s Digital Agency has added an artificial intelligence agent to its government AI platform, called Gennai. The new tool can complete several tasks on its own from one instruction.

The platform is available to about 180,000 government employees. Jiji Press reported the update on Oct. 26, 2026.

What the New AI Agent Does

The AI agent can perform two or more tasks at the same time. It works without users needing to give separate instructions for each step.

For example, the agent can prepare meeting minutes, summarize them and share them within a department. All of this can happen after a single direction from the user.

Before this update, users had to type a separate prompt for each task. Staff who needed several jobs done in a row had to handle each one by hand.

Now, a user can simply upload audio from a meeting. The AI agent will then prepare and translate the meeting minutes without the user entering a prompt.

The Digital Agency said this is the first time in the world that a government body has set up an environment for using an AI agent at this scale. The agency pointed to the large number of staff who can access the tool.

Inside the Gennai Platform

Gennai is a generative AI platform built for government work. It includes about 40 applications that staff can use for daily tasks.

Some apps let users chat with colleagues. Others help staff prepare documents and meeting minutes.

The platform can also translate and summarize documents. This helps staff work with materials written in different languages.

Other tools focus on research. Staff can search past statements made in parliament and look up laws and regulations.

Gennai also includes a tool that turns audio files into written text. This transcription feature works alongside the agent’s ability to handle meeting recordings.

The platform has an app that lets government staff share their knowledge and expertise. Workers across departments can use it to learn from each other.

With the new agent, many of these separate tools can now be linked together. One instruction can start a chain of tasks that once needed several prompts.

The AI agent function is now part of Gennai and open to the roughly 180,000 government employees who use the platform. The Digital Agency’s addition was reported on Oct. 26, 2026.
