An AI model called Ox Alpha showed up on OpenRouter over the weekend with no name attached to it. Within days, it climbed to the top of several benchmark rankings, matching or beating some of the best models available.
The lack of a creator name led to a wave of online speculation. Developers and researchers spent the weekend guessing which lab was behind it.
Many people pointed to a Chinese AI company, based on the model's style and performance. That guess turned out to be correct.
According to Bloomberg, the model was built by Z.ai, the company known for its GLM series of AI models. Z.ai confirmed the report itself.
What Is Ox Alpha?
Z.ai says Ox Alpha is a reasoning model. It is built for coding tasks, long agentic work, and production use.
The company says it works well for long software projects and complex reasoning tasks. It can also handle work that mixes text with images.
Z.ai plans to release the model's weights on Wednesday. Once that happens, outside developers can build their own tools on top of it.
Releasing the weights means the model becomes open weight. This is different from closed models that only run through a company's own systems.
Open weight models let developers download and run the model themselves. This often makes the technology cheaper and easier to access.
Growing Competition From China
Z.ai's GLM models are already known in the AI community. Hugging Face used an earlier GLM model to defend its own site during an attack involving OpenAI agents.
Earlier this month, Z.ai released another model called GLM-5.3. That model reportedly matched Anthropic's Fable 5 on some benchmark tests.
The release of Ox Alpha follows that pattern. Chinese AI labs continue to release capable models at a lower cost than many Western competitors.
This trend puts pressure on companies like OpenAI and Anthropic, which charge more for access to their top models. Cheaper open weight options could pull developers and businesses away from those services.
TechCrunch reported that it reached out to Z.ai for further comment. No additional response had been shared at the time of the report.
For now, the main confirmed fact is the release date. Z.ai says the weights for Ox Alpha will be public on Wednesday.
