OpenAI has launched a new feature that makes ChatGPT more visual. The company calls it Intelligent UI, and it rolled out on Wednesday together with a new GPT-6 model.
The new interface brings a large number of visuals into users' conversations with the chatbot. OpenAI says many of these visuals will be interactive.
Instead of flat pictures, ChatGPT will often include elements that users can work with directly. These include tappable buttons, custom calculators built for a specific task, interactive charts and editable graphs.
The visuals appear as part of ChatGPT's answers. OpenAI introduced the feature as part of the wider GPT-6 launch.
What Intelligent UI Does
OpenAI says the main goal of the feature is to make "learning complex topics easier." The company did not say whether the change is also meant to attract a wider audience.
During a call with journalists, OpenAI staff gave a short demonstration of the new interface. They showed how the chatbot can quickly create diagrams and visuals to explain abstract topics.
Aarush Selvan, a product manager at OpenAI, said that "ChatGPT has predominantly been a text-based interface." He said the company wants to help users get things done, from planning a recipe or a trip to learning something new.
According to Selvan, for many of these tasks "the most helpful answers aren't just text." The new feature was built around that idea.
Examples Shown by OpenAI
Selvan gave the example of a college student who wants to understand how an airplane wing works. He asked ChatGPT to "explore how an airplane wing generates lift."
The chatbot responded by quickly producing several diagrams. These were designed to show how planes stay in the air.
OpenAI shared other examples as well. They included visuals for recipes, a diagram explaining bicycle mechanics and a map for a multi-day hiking trip.
The company also showed a personal savings calculator. This type of tool lets users work with the numbers directly inside the chat.
Users will be able to control how much of this they see. Like other parts of ChatGPT's personality, the visual feature can be customized.
If users do not want as many visuals in their responses, they can dial them back. This gives people the option to keep a more text-focused experience.
Intelligent UI is rolling out globally with GPT-6. Paid users on the Pro, Plus, Business and Enterprise plans received access first on Wednesday.
Users on the free tier and the lower-cost Go tier get the feature on Thursday. That brings Intelligent UI to all ChatGPT plans.
