OpenAI Adds Virtual Clothing Try-On to ChatGPT Shopping

OpenAI has added two new shopping features to ChatGPT. The company announced the global launch of both tools on Thursday, October 1.

The first feature lets users virtually try on clothing and accessories. The second, called Favorites, lets users save products they like so they can find them later.

How the Virtual Try-On Feature Works

To use virtual try-on, users upload a selfie or a full-body photo. ChatGPT then shows how a piece of clothing or an accessory might look on them.

The option appears as a new Try On button in ChatGPT's shopping results. Users can also upload a picture of an item, such as a screenshot from a website, and ask ChatGPT to try it on for them.

OpenAI said the shopping features run on its newly launched ChatGPT Images 2.5 model. The company claims the model produces more natural lighting and richer textures.

OpenAI also said the model follows editing instructions more reliably. It added that the model cuts down the time it takes to create images.

Favorites and Other Shopping Tools

The Favorites feature saves products to a Library inside the app. Users can return to these items whenever they want.

OpenAI noted that saved products will be stored alongside users' try-on images. This keeps both in one place.

The company said ChatGPT can help with shopping in other ways too. Users can describe a style they want to try and ask ChatGPT to find the pieces needed to complete the look.

Users can also upload photos of outfits worn by celebrities. ChatGPT will then search for those items that are available to buy.

People have often used Pinterest and Google for these tasks in recent years. Both have served as sources of fashion ideas that lead to sales for online stores.

Google launched its own virtual try-on feature in July 2025. That tool also lets users see how clothes might look on them.

This is not OpenAI's first attempt at shopping inside ChatGPT. The company earlier tested an instant checkout feature.

That feature did not perform well, and OpenAI had to change direction. TechCrunch reported on those struggles in March 2026.

Other AI companies are also testing shopping tools. Agentic AI startup Instinct recently began pushing product recommendations to its users.

Some users felt those suggestions went too far. They said the recommendations seemed more like ads than helpful advice.

OpenAI's new try-on and Favorites features are now available to ChatGPT users around the world.
