Mistral Raises €3 Billion in Series D Funding Round

Mistral has raised €3 billion in a new funding round. The company says it is the largest equity round ever completed by a European tech company. Mistral is only three years old.

The round gives Mistral a post-money valuation of more than €21 billion. Samsung Electronics led the investment. Scaleup Europe Fund, managed by EQT, and existing investor PSG Equity joined as co-leads.

Mistral builds AI models and offers them as open weight systems. This means the underlying model code is public rather than locked behind a private system.

How Mistral Plans to Use the Funding

The company plans to put the money toward its research work. This research supports its infrastructure, products, and approach to independent AI systems.

Mistral also wants to grow its computing power. More compute means the company can train larger models.

Part of the funding will go toward expanding infrastructure. Mistral wants to grow its presence in more countries and serve more business customers.

The company already operates in 20 countries. It supports more than 125 enterprise clients, including Airbus, ASML, and HSBC.

A Shift in What Companies Want From AI

Early AI companies focused mostly on building the most powerful model possible. Mistral says the market has moved toward a different question.

Businesses and governments now want AI systems they can control. They want performance, but they also want choice and independence from a single provider.

Mistral describes itself as the only AI company building a full stack to meet this need. This includes open weight models, infrastructure, computing power, and finished products.

The company says this setup means customers are not tied to one vendor's pricing, roadmap, or availability.

Mistral calls this approach sovereign AI. The company defines sovereignty across four areas. These include data staying inside an organization, models that can be customized, private and predictable computing power, and systems that stay fully auditable.

The goal is to let companies use AI without exposing sensitive data or internal knowledge outside their own systems.

Mistral's investor list has grown across two major funding rounds. ASML led the company's Series C round. Samsung Electronics led this new Series D round.

Both companies work in advanced manufacturing and engineering. Their involvement points to interest from industrial firms in AI systems that keep data under their own control.

New investors in this round include Advent, funds and accounts managed by BlackRock, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

Existing investors also joined the round. These include a16z, ASML, Belfius, BNP Paribas CIB, Bpifrance, Carmignac, DST Global, Eurazeo, General Catalyst, Headline, Hillspire, Index Ventures, Korelya Capital, Lightspeed, NVIDIA, and Salesforce Ventures.

Phoenix Court's Solar fund also returned as an investor. This fund includes LocalGlobe, Latitude, and Solar.

Mistral says the funding reflects support from investors across Europe, Asia, and North America. The company plans to keep expanding its model research, infrastructure, and enterprise partnerships going forward.
