Meta's Muse AI App Launches to No. 2 Ranking in US App Store

Meta released a new AI app called Muse this week. The app is built around an AI agent that can complete tasks for users rather than just answer questions.

Early data from the market research firm Sensor Tower shows Muse has been downloaded more than 83,000 times on iOS in the United States. The app is currently only available in the US.

That number was enough to push Muse into the No. 2 spot on Apple's App Store Top Charts. On Wednesday, the app was ranked fourth, so it has moved up since then.

How Muse Compares to Past Meta Launches

Muse's numbers look smaller next to other Meta app debuts. Threads was downloaded more than 4.3 million times in the US on its first day alone.

The Meta AI app also had a stronger start, with 108,000 US downloads on its debut. Muse has not yet matched that pace after several days on the market.

ChatGPT had an even faster start. It passed half a million US installs in less than a week, which was also its only market at the time.

Divided evenly, that works out to about 83,300 downloads a day for ChatGPT. Muse took twice as long to reach a similar download count.

Muse's performance on Android has been weaker than on iOS. The app currently ranks No. 338 in the Productivity category on Google Play.

Android download figures for Muse are not yet available. The app can also be accessed through the web and through WhatsApp, though those numbers are not included in the current data.

A Growing Rival Called Instinct

Meta is not the only company building agent apps for everyday users. Google has its Gemini Spark tool, and Anthropic has Claude Cowork.

For agents made for casual, everyday use, the closest competition to Muse right now is an app called Instinct. It works through text messages and was recently valued at $2.5 billion.

Instinct has raised concerns over its broad privacy policy and security. Even so, people in Silicon Valley have spoken favorably about what the app can do.

Instinct has $350 million on hand and has been releasing new features quickly. This week it added email addresses for all users.

The company also said it is building a kind of social network for its AI agents. This would let one person's Instinct agent communicate directly with a friend's agent to coordinate plans.

Instinct recently added integrations with Stripe and 1Password. It also launched a location sharing feature so the agent can act based on a user's current location.

Muse's launch came just days after Meta agreed to an $18 billion multistate settlement tied to a lawsuit over harms linked to social media. The app also asks users to share more personal data with Meta than some of its past products.

Meta has faced other privacy related legal issues in past years, including fines from the US Federal Trade Commission. Muse remains in its early days, and its download numbers are still being tracked as the app continues to roll out across app store rankings this week.
