Meta announced on Tuesday that businesses can now use AI agents to set up and manage WhatsApp Business messaging. The news came alongside Meta's announcement of new AI-focused subscription plans.
WhatsApp Business is the service that lets companies message customers directly through WhatsApp. Setting it up used to require jumping between several different tools.
Developers previously had to use the Developer Console, Meta's Business Manager, the API reference, and their own code editor. That process took extra time and effort.
Now, businesses can simply describe what they need to an AI agent. The agent handles the setup steps through conversation instead of manual configuration.
How the New Tool Works
This is possible because of a new tool called the WhatsApp Business Tools MCP. MCP stands for Model Context Protocol.
An MCP server acts as a connector. It links AI coding agents directly to a company's platform so the agent can complete tasks on a user's behalf.
In this case, the MCP connects agents like Claude, Cursor, Codex, and ChatGPT to the WhatsApp Business Platform. The AI agent can create a WhatsApp Business account for a company.
It can also add and verify a phone number. The agent can register the business for access to the Cloud API as well.
The tool can check whether the business meets WhatsApp's Terms of Service. It can also handle other background steps that once required manual review.
Businesses can ask the AI agent to build a new messaging template from scratch. They can also request edits to templates that already exist.
The agent can test messages and webhooks before they go live. It can monitor issues that previously failed quietly, including problems with the Terms of Service, payment methods, or Business Verification.
Part of a Wider MCP Trend
Meta already offers other MCP servers. These include tools for managing ad campaigns and monitoring app configurations.
The WhatsApp Business Tools MCP is a targeted addition. It focuses specifically on onboarding businesses to WhatsApp.
Meta is not alone in building these connectors. Companies including PayPal, Stripe, GitHub, Notion, Slack, Salesforce, and Atlassian all offer their own MCP servers.
X, Google, and Microsoft have also released MCP tools this year. The approach lets AI agents interact securely with company platforms without custom integrations for each one.
During setup, businesses can also use Meta's separate Social Technologies MCP. That tool helps discover API endpoints and search documentation.
It can also help troubleshoot errors that come up during configuration. Meta said this second tool works alongside the new WhatsApp-specific one.
Together, the two tools are meant to reduce the manual work involved in getting a business onto WhatsApp. Meta framed the change as a way to remove busywork from the setup process.
