IG Metall Calls Strikes at Over 2,000 German Workplaces

Germany’s largest trade union has called on thousands of workers to walk out at more than 2,000 workplaces by the end of this week. The news comes as Berlin hosts a government-run summit focused on artificial intelligence.

Several well-known companies could be affected by the strikes. They include carmakers Opel and Rolls-Royce, consumer goods company Procter & Gamble, and Daimler Truck AG.

The updates were part of a round-up of top headlines from Germany on November 2, 2026. The reports came from DW, with input from several news agencies.

Berlin Digital Summit Puts AI in Focus

The Digital Summit in Berlin is looking at how to bring Germany and Europe up to speed in artificial intelligence. The conference will cover both the uses and the dangers of the technology.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz is scheduled to speak to guests at the event. He is also set to be introduced to a humanoid robot.

Separately, the German and UK defense ministers are meeting to discuss AI. Their talks will look at expanding the role of AI in military cooperation between the two countries.

In energy news, German gas storage levels are well below the levels required by law. This comes ahead of the heating season.

The report did not say how far below the legal requirement the storage levels are.

IG Metall Pushes for Higher Pay

The strike call came from IG Metall, the largest trade union in both Germany and Europe. It represents workers in the metalworking, electrical, steel, automotive and industrial manufacturing sectors.

The union wants employees to walk off the job at more than 2,000 workplaces nationwide. The action is set to run through the end of the week.

Other companies expected to be affected include e-mobility supplier Vitesco and precision engineering firm Paul Beier GmbH.

Workers in the western town of Andernach have already held a warning strike, according to DW.

IG Metall is asking for a 5% pay rise over a 12-month period. It is also seeking job and site security for its members.

Employers have offered a one-off payment next year. They have also proposed a pay rise of 1.3% in July 2028.

Employers pointed to Germany’s economic troubles to explain why they would not meet the union’s demand. They also cited cost pressures on industry.
