Google has started taking preorders for its new laptop. The device is called Googlebook, and it costs $899.
The company first showed off the laptop in May. On Monday, it confirmed the device is ready for customers to order ahead of its release.
Googlebook runs on Android OS. It also includes a desktop version of the Chrome browser, along with other features borrowed from ChromeOS.
Google says the laptop is meant to be a step up from a standard Chromebook. The main difference is how much the device relies on Gemini, Google's AI system.
What Features Does Googlebook Include
One new feature is called Magic Cursor. It lets users highlight text or images on their screen and then ask Gemini to act on them.
For example, a person could hover over an email and ask Gemini to check if it looks suspicious. They could also select several images and ask Gemini to combine them.
This function is similar to Circle to Search, a tool already available on Android phones. That feature lets users circle or tap items on their screen to search with Google.
Another feature on Googlebook is called Rambler. It is a dictation tool that turns rambling or messy spoken notes into cleaner, readable text.
The laptop also supports something Google calls vibe-coded widgets. These are small, AI-generated tools built into the device.
Other Gemini features, like Gemini Spark and Gemini Live, are also part of the laptop. However, those tools are not limited to Googlebook and already work on other devices.
Google's Plan for Schools and Chromebooks
Google has said there are around 50 million Chromebooks currently in use across schools. Many of these are used by students and teachers in K-12 classrooms.
The company told TechCrunch in May that existing Chromebooks will keep receiving support. Some of those devices may become eligible to shift toward the new Googlebook experience later on.
This suggests Google sees Googlebook as a long-term path to bring more Chromebook users into its Gemini ecosystem. The laptop is one part of that broader shift toward AI-based computing.
Every Googlebook purchase includes 12 months of Google AI Pro. That subscription includes 5TB of cloud storage, access to Gemini Advanced tools, and three months of YouTube Premium and Adobe Photoshop.
Google says the laptops will receive software updates for up to 10 years. That is longer than the support window typically offered on older Chromebook models.
Several manufacturers are building the new laptops. These include Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo.
The devices use materials like aluminum, magnesium alloy, and carbon fiber. Displays go up to 2.8K OLED, and the laptops include haptic glass trackpads and backlit keyboards.
Under the hood, Googlebooks run on processors from Intel and Qualcomm, paired with dedicated NPUs for AI tasks. Google says battery life reaches up to 14 hours.
Preorders are open now through the Google Store, Best Buy, and other retailers. Googlebooks will officially go on sale October 4 in the United States.
International buyers in Canada, the U.K., Ireland, France, Germany, and Australia will be able to purchase the laptop starting October 5.
