Google Launches Playground, an AI Tool That Builds Games From Text Prompts

Google has launched a new experimental platform that lets people build video games using simple text prompts. The tool, called Playground, comes from Google Labs, the company's public incubator for test products.

The launch took place on Wednesday, October 7, 2026. Playground lets users create browser-based games without any coding, design, or illustration skills.

How Playground Works

Creators can start by choosing a genre, such as trivia or racing. They can also begin a project from scratch if they prefer.

Next, users decide whether they want a 2D or 3D game. They also choose between a single-player or multiplayer experience.

After those choices, creators describe the mechanics, gameplay, and visual style they want. The AI then builds the game based on those instructions.

Playground also lets users upload their own images. The AI can turn those visuals into game assets that match the overall art style of the game.

Finished games can be played on both mobile devices and computers. Creators can keep a project private, share it through a link, or publish it to Playground's Explore gallery.

Published games can include features such as leaderboards. Creators can keep editing their projects even after release.

Access, Pricing, and Future Plans

Playground is first available to users aged 18 and older in the United States. Google said it plans to expand the platform to more countries.

Browsing and playing games in the catalog is free. Creating games uses a weekly token system.

The free tier gives users a limited number of tokens each week. Google One AI subscribers receive higher usage limits.

Google also said it plans to add Unity Spark integration in a future update. This could give users access to more 3D tools and "professional-level" game mechanics through Unity's technology.

Playground joins other AI game-building tools on the market. Roblox announced its own Build feature in July, which lets users create games through natural-language prompts.

Google has worked on gaming projects before. The company ran the Stadia cloud gaming service, which it shut down in 2022.

Google later added games to other platforms. One example is YouTube Playables, a hub of instantly playable web-based games.

Playground is now live for eligible U.S. users. Google has not given a timeline for the Unity Spark update or its wider international rollout.
