Figure AI has launched an app called Index. The company built it to collect real world data for training robots.
The app was tested in stealth for four months before this launch. It is now available on Google Play and the App Store.
Index has been downloaded more than 264,000 times. Users span 108 countries around the world.
The app has over 44,000 weekly active users. These users are called Creators.
Creators record videos of everyday tasks. This includes cooking, cleaning, laundry, and other household chores.
Some videos come from businesses. These include logistics centers, restaurants, factories, and offices.
Creators have uploaded more than 16 million videos so far. The app processes 30 minutes of video every second.
That adds up to about 4.9 years of human work uploaded each day. Figure AI says this scale is needed to train a general purpose robot.
The company has paid Creators $15 million to date. Figure AI plans to spend more than $1 billion on data and compute over the next 12 months.
How Index Collects Data
The data pipeline has five stages. These are filtering, fraud review, deduplication, rebalancing, and annotation.
Automated filters check each video for technical, visual, and semantic quality. Human analysts then review samples to catch attempts to bypass the filters.
The team uses embeddings to spot duplicate or overly similar clips. This helps keep the dataset varied.
Task quotas and clustering are used to balance the collection. Each accepted video gets a text caption describing what happens in it.
Per 1,000 hours collected, the dataset includes 373 unique tasks. It also includes 1,146 unique objects and 116 unique environments.
What Happens Next
The data trains Figure AI's system called Helix. Helix is the software that powers the company's robots.
Figure AI says Index is a step toward offering robots as a service. The company frames today's Creators as an early version of future robot labor.
Anyone can sign up as a Creator through the app. Users can record tasks at home or at their workplace, or book a Creator to visit them.
