Apple Watch Audio Intelligence Features Enter Developer Beta in iOS 27.3

Apple has started beta testing its “Audio Intelligence” features for the Apple Watch. The features are rolling out to developers in the iOS 27.3 beta update, according to a TechCrunch report published on November 2, 2026.

Apple first announced the technology in September alongside the Apple Watch Series 12. It said then that the conversation features would reach beta testing later in the year.

Audio Intelligence includes four opt-in features. They are Sound Recognition, Music Recognition with Shazam, Live Rewind, and Siri Recap.

Sound Recognition can alert wearers to sounds like sirens, alarms, and doorbells. Apple says this can help deaf and hard-of-hearing users. Music Recognition detects songs playing nearby and shows the title and artist in the Smart Stack.

How Live Rewind and Siri Recap Work

Live Rewind lets users see what someone just said. A double-press of the Digital Crown shows the last 15 seconds of speech as text on the watch.

Users can ask Siri about the text or save it to the Siri app that shipped with iOS 27. If they do neither, the text disappears about 30 seconds after the watch display dims.

Using Live Rewind plays an audible chime, even when the watch is on silent or headphones are connected. The watch also shows a full-screen animation and a microphone indicator. Apple says these signals are meant to alert people nearby.

Siri Recap creates notes from conversations. It produces a title, a short summary, and key points, such as dates, deadlines, or pricing details.

The feature does not identify speakers, save raw audio, or create word-for-word transcripts. Apple suggested it could be used in work meetings, parent-teacher conferences, or personal training sessions.

Users can turn on Siri Recap manually or set schedules based on time and location. It can be turned off at any time from Control Center. Recaps do not run while users listen to music on headphones or use noise cancellation.

Users are prompted to review recaps at the end of the day and when they first unlock the watch in the morning. Saved recaps can be edited or exported to apps like Notes and Journal. Unsaved recaps delete themselves after seven days.

Privacy Design and Device Requirements

The features use the S11 chip, Apple Intelligence models on the iPhone, and Apple’s Private Cloud Compute. On the watch, a hardware-isolated area called the Secure Exclave holds a rolling audio buffer. Apple says this buffer cannot be accessed by watchOS, apps, the user, or Apple.

For Siri Recap, a small AI model on the watch detects when a conversation is happening. The audio is encrypted and sent to the paired iPhone, where it is transcribed and shortened to less than half its length. The raw audio is then permanently deleted.

The condensed text is encrypted and sent to Private Cloud Compute to create the recap. Apple says the results are deleted from the cloud right after being returned. Saved recaps and snippets can sync through iCloud with end-to-end encryption.

Siri Recap is designed to leave out financial data, government-assigned identifiers, authentication data, and certain personal identifiers. Apple’s support guide warns that automated filtering may not remove all sensitive information. It also says summaries may be incomplete or inaccurate.

Live Rewind and Siri Recap require an Apple Watch Series 12 or Apple Watch Ultra 4. The watch must be paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 16 or later, not including the iPhone 16e. Apple says the features should not affect battery life.

The features will launch in English and will not first be available in the EU. Features that use server-side models will have daily usage limits. Users under 13 cannot use the conversation features, and users under 18 with a Child Account need a parent or guardian to turn them on.

Apple says the features will move to a public beta for broader testing. After that, they will become available to all users.
