Anthropic CEO Warns AI Could Wipe Out Half of Entry-Level White-Collar Jobs

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei says artificial intelligence could disrupt half of entry-level white-collar jobs within one to five years. The warning covers fields such as finance, consulting, technology, and legal services.

Amodei made the comments in a Fox News interview published on May 19, 2026. He said AI has improved quickly over the past two years.

“Two years ago, it was at the level of a smart high school student; now it’s probably at the level of a smart college student and reaching beyond that,” he said. He added that the technology is nearing a point where it can handle more complex professional work.

Amodei pointed to tasks such as summarizing documents, brainstorming, and preparing financial reports. These tasks often make up much of the work done in entry-level roles.

“I would not be surprised if somewhere between one and five years, we started to see big effects here,” Amodei said. He described the possible result as a “serious employment crisis.”

He also said stopping AI development would be hard because of competition between the United States and China. He suggested governments may need to consider policies such as taxing AI companies to spread the benefits more widely.

Anthropic’s September 2025 Economic Index report looked at its business API traffic. It found that 77% of business uses involved automation, compared with about 50% on Claude’s consumer platform.

The company’s 2026 State of AI Agents report surveyed more than 500 technical leaders. It found 57% of organizations already used AI agents for multistage workflows, and 81% planned more complex AI uses in 2026.

Anthropic’s Own Hiring Has Shifted

In an October 16, 2026 report, Anthropic examined hiring and workforce changes inside the company. Junior employees made up 14% of its technical workforce, down from 21% in early 2025.

The share of junior employees among new technical hires fell from 27% to 9%. Anthropic said better AI tools played a part, as staff hand more coding and debugging work to AI agents.

In an April 2026 survey, about one-third of machine-learning managers said they hired fewer people because of AI. About one-fifth of software-engineering managers said the same.

Anthropic’s total technical headcount still grew over the period. Hiring in sales, finance, and recruiting rose at a faster pace.

The report also found that workers now spend more time directing AI agents and checking their output. Many also build tools that help coordinate automated processes.

Research Shows Limited Signs of Wide Job Losses

Anthropic’s March 2026 labor market study found AI could speed up 94% of tasks in computer and math jobs. However, actual AI use covered only about 33% of those tasks.

A Stanford Digital Economy Lab study, revised in August 2026, used payroll data on millions of US workers through June. It found employment for workers aged 22 to 25 in AI-exposed jobs was 19% below where it would have been if it had tracked less-exposed peers.

The researchers said slower hiring, not more layoffs, explained much of the gap. They called the results early signs rather than proof that AI caused the change, and found no evidence of economy-wide job losses.

The Yale Budget Lab’s October 14, 2026 labor market update reached a similar result. Its review of September employment data found no clear evidence of large-scale job disruption linked to AI.
